When the baby is kidnapped by goblins, Ida has to go out into Outside Over There to rescue her and take her back home. As a child Sendak was affected powerfully by the abudction of the Lingbergh baby. In this atmospheric book, he confronts children's fears of abduction by unknown forces, and leads it to a positive conclusion. Ida's resentment of her sister is another theme: to begin with she does not relate to her sister as a person, but more as a demanding project for whom she does not wish to be responsible. By the end of the journey, she appreciates better that her baby sister is a person and a member of the family.
